In search for true beauty

Description

This is a mask that I made in my 3D Design class. The project was to make a mask using a 'traditional' masking technique.

I ended up taking the idea of the beauty myth of how women must be physically beautiful and brought it into mask form. Women get surgeries done and mutate their face to look a different way. --The pins all over the face are to represent injections like botox into all layer of the face. You may not be able to tell, but there are also needles hanging from thread on the face.

I sewed everything by hand. The hair (real-hair hair extentions) is sewn on, as is the nose and facial skin (which is made out of a pleather from Joann Fabrics). I made the mask shape with 100% cotton muslin and did a maché over a foam head. There is a stand made out of wood that makes a T-shape in the back to hold of the mask. The lips are made out of rubber covered with a soft material which was colored with real lipstick-- real make-up was used on this mask

This entire project was in connection to my beliefs and how I feel that women have no need to get these kind of alterations to their hair and face because it is not real beauty. Beauty is what is inside, not what is on the outside.

This was THE best project that I successfully completed in my 3D course.

This is great! I love the idea behind it too.
